Búri, the first out of the Void.

Image
Auðumbla licks free  Búri  as she produces rivers of rivers of milk from her udders in an illustration from an Icelandic 18th century manuscript of the  Prose Edda >> In  Norse mythology ,  Auðumbla [ pronunciation? ]  is a primeval  cow . The primordial frost  jötunn   Ymir  fed from her milk, and over the course of three days she licked away the salty rime rocks and revealed  Búri , grandfather of the gods and brothers  Odin ,  Vili and Vé . The creature is solely attested in the  Prose Edda , composed in the 13th century by Icelander  Snorri Sturluson . Scholars identify her as stemming from a very early stratum of  Germanic mythology , and ultimately belonging to larger complex of primordial bovines or cow-associated goddesses.<< Ref.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Au%C3%B0umbla I believe we should treat  Auðumbla as a deep space or dimensions Traveling ship with its live cre...

The Dream and Death of Baldur (Balder) notes.

Image
“Baldur’s Death” by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1817) 04-12-2019 Just a few links, articles, and books that cover this subject well. In no particular order. TDK >> Baldur was one of the most beloved of all the gods. The son of Odin, the chief of the gods, and the benevolent sorceress goddess Frigg, Baldur was a generous, joyful, and courageous character who gladdened the hearts of all who spent time with him. When, therefore, he began to have ominous dreams of some grave misfortune befalling him, the fearful gods appointed Odin to discover their meaning. Baldur’s father wasted no time in mounting his steed, Sleipnir, and riding to the underworld to consult a dead seeress whom he knew to be especially wise in such matters. When, in one of his countless disguises, he reached the cold and misty underworld, he found the halls arrayed in splendor, as if some magnificent feast were about to occur. Odin woke the seeress and questioned her concerning this festivity, and she resp...

R: Nine Noble Virtues of Asatru

Image
The Asatru moral code of conduct is known as the Nine Noble Virtues of Asatru. The Nine Noble Virtues represent the distilled wisdom and ancient Germanic moral code gleaned from various ancient sources including the Poetic Edda (particularly the Hávamál), the Icelandic Sagas and Germanic folklore. To live as one of the True folk, you should lead your life in accordance with the Nine Noble Virtues. Interpretations of these virtues range from person to person, and from Kindred to Kindred. The following represent some of our opinions on how the virtues should be interpreted The ancient Heathens held these certain virtues to be spiritual law. These were not at all the only moral values of the ancient Heathens, but perhaps the most highly regarded. The ancient tribal laws began as custom and tradition, and these laws constituted those customs and traditions. Before anyone can even think of approaching the Gods & Goddesses of Asatru, they should first make sure they know these spiritual ...

Heathen Nemetonic or Hammer Hallowing Sacred Space.

Image
>> Hammer Hallowing (of a sacred space). One makes the Hammer-Sign facing North, East, South, West, and then with the fist aimed at sky/ceiling and finally at ground/floor in order to clear sacred space. The Elhaz Rune is often used in the same way and for the same purpose. Hammer Hallowing = using the Hammer-Sign to consecrate sacred space for a Heathen ritual. See Hammer-Sign and Hammarsettung. Hammer-Sign = religious gesture symbolizing Thor's Hammer. Invokes the hallowing and protecting presence of Thor. To Hammer-Sign yourself: with clenched fist, touch forehead, just below breastbone, just below left breast, then just below right breast. You have essentially made an upside-down capital T. You can also make the same gesture in the air over anything you wish to hallow. Ben Middleton once made it in the air in front of him while calling on Thor to successfully stop a pursuing pack of feral dogs! Don't go out of your way to test that out yourself; Thor helps those who ...

Use of the Term Heathen

As a Druid of perhaps Old School, I normally use the term "Heathen" and "Pagan" interchangeably as they were in pre Twentieth Century press. See my blog "What we so soon forget under the Druid's Tree" for a reference. http://hoodoo-vodou-druido-grove.blogspot.com/2014/08/what-we-so-soon-forget-under-druids-tree.html Yet Neo-Heathenism has aquire a new well accepted meaning. That of pertaining to old Germanic, Nordic and Viking religions that have be reborn as Asatru , Odlinism and others. So here in "A Druid in Midgard"  I to will use it in its newer social context. What's Wrong about Valknut

Image
The Valknut. >> The  valknut  ( Old Norse   valr , "slain warriors" +  knut , "knot") is a  symbol  consisting of  three  interlocked  triangles , and appears on various Germanic  objects. A number of theories have been proposed for its significance. The name  valknut  is an unattested modern invention used to describe the symbol, and was not used contemporarily when the symbol was used. The valknut has been compared to the three-horned symbol found on the 9th century  Snoldelev Stone , and may be related to it << http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valknut The  Stora Hammars I stone , where the valknut occurs in the most central and predominant position, appears alongside images interpreted as Odin with a  characteristic spear  shunting another figure into a burial mound while a  raven  is overhead and another man is hanged. Odin with  Sleipnir . Valknuts are drawn beneath the horse...
